Hopes and fears

I had my 20 week anomaly scan on Tuesday and everything seemed fine - she even gave us a little wave at the end which was lovely : ) It wasn't the easiest of hospital appointments though as I decided to be very honest about how depressed I have been getting of late with the midwife and she instantly referred me to the Mother and Infant Mental Health Service. This was good in that they are taking me seriously and acting quickly but also slightly scary as one of the questions they asked me during my assessment was 'can you keep yourself safe before we see you again on Friday?' I know it's a standard question but it just made me a bit scared about having said anything. All in all though I know I need support and at least antenatal depression is a lot more recognised now than when I first had it five years ago.

Have also been battling a hideous cold this week (missed my first day of work since returning several months ago today) and am not eating properly as a result - too tired to cook decent food, but probably not helping my immune system by not eating the fruit and veg I really need. Have taken huge inspiration from ayesha's most recent blog listing of food she has eaten - it made my mouth water! So am determined to try to make some good wholesome food for myself tomorrow and to give my immune system the boost it needs.

We can do this.

blossom's Gravatar So sorry that you are feeling so bad at the moment but a big pat on the back for being so honest and open about it and getting the help you need, I was lucky as I never had post natel depression but 12 months after my husband died I was so low and had to have a consellor. He was great and really helped me, so take any help they offer and just take really good care of yourself and I am sure you know we are all here for you.
Love and big hugs x x x

katfrin's Gravatar HI Kat,
Yep that question would be pretty in your face about things but they need to assess the risk and tr-iage the resources- and that's a pretty good question to assess just how immediately you need help. ( If you answer it truthfully of course:-))
Great news on the scan - mine were no where near as co-operative on theirs.
Colds don't help you make good choices because you can't taste or smell properly - I'msure that you'll make much better choices as soon as you can tell your teastebuds are back in business.

Ayesha's Gravatar Well done for being honest with the health professionals. I think it must be hard to admit how you are feeling at a time when people are expecting you to be happy and glowy and all the other stereotypes attached to pregnant women. It sounds like you are in good hands.

It is amazing the difference good healthy food can make to how we feel. The only problem is I am enjoying my meals so much at the moment, I don't want them to end!

Hope you shake off the cold soon

Mermaid's Gravatar Hello Kat,

Hope you are feeling a bit better today. You've been really strong letting people know how you feel, well done, we're with you; if only more had the courage and it was spoken about truthfully. It sounds really good that there is a special unit to help you, if things have improved in five years just imagine what they were like 20 years ago! I'm sure that using this Programme will help as there is so much positivity and there are so many fantastic people on it to give you support. Take care lovely, be gentle with yourself and know that you are not alone X
